Modern Strategic Planning Resources -- The following is a list of internet sites which offer resources of value to individuals and organizations engaged in strategic planning. If you know of useful sites not listed, please email their URL for consideration as to possible inclusion. Before listing, resources on the sites are assessed as to content, cost to the user, and practical value. Commercial sites may be included to the extent that they meet the foregoing criteria, contain resources of direct value to strategic planners, and are not simply promotional pieces. |
Strategic Planning Model --- A model designed to simplify strategic planning processes and free planning organizations from extensive dependence on consultants.
Strategic Planning Model (Tabular) --- The same model as above but in a tabular format.
Strategic Planning Definitions --- Definitions related to the simplified Strategic Planning Model.
Strategic Planning for Nonprofit Organizations --- A PDF slide presentation on the Strategic Planning Model as presented at the 2001 Washington State Housing Conference.

Added 10/8/02 - Think - Plan - Do - Review --- An interesting model which could be of particular value to the small business firm. Includes "fill-in-the-blanks" formats for documenting where you are, where you'd like to be, and how to get there.
Strategic Planning Emphasis and Planning Satisfaction in Small Firms --- Article from the Journal of Business Strategies 13, No. 1 (Spring 1996): 42-64. The site offers an important focus on the linkages between strategic planning characteristics and planning satisfaction.
Strategic Planning Essay --- A Strategic Planning and Needs Assessment Essay which provides a step-by-step outline of how schools and communities can develop their own strategic plan.
Eight Maxims of Strategy --- These maxims and descriptions are from Chapter XX (pp. 348-349) of B. H. Liddell-Hart's book, Strategy (2nd Edition Revised).
Strategic Planning FAQs --- Frequently Asked Questions regarding strategic planning. Although designed for non-profit organizations, the site also offers a great deal information useful to anyone engaged in strategic planning.

Strategic Planning Handbook --- This site contains an exceptional strategic planning handbook prepared for Arizona's state agencies...a wealth of useful information on the mechanics of the planning process.
Strategic Planning: A Ten-Step Method --- Ten steps which provide guidance in the strategic planning process.
Government Performance Results Act of 1993 (GPRA) --- The law mandating strategic planning within the U.S. Government.
Sun Tzu's Art of War --- Written about 2500 years ago, this work has endured as the classic guide for strategic planning. Despite its title, it is less about combat than it is about winning without fighting, winning through strategy. Modern interpretations relate the work to sports, marketing, sales, management, and scores of other endeavors.
The 36 Strategems (with examples) --- This classic of ancient China emphasizes deception as a military art. It follows in the tradition of Sun Tzu's Art of War by seeking to win without fighting.
The Book of Five Rings by Miyamoto Musashi --- Written about 1645, this is a Japanese guide to strategy in the tradition of the samurai.
Tao Te Ching ( also known as The Way of Power, The Book of the Way, and The Book of 5000 Characters) --- This work, older even than The Art of War, is credited to Lao Tzu about whom little is known. Although regarded as a religious work, it has been a continuing guide for individual and organizational behavior for centuries.
Added 10/11/02 - Leaders Ask Good Questions --- This book by Scott Pickard is available in paperback and e-book formats as well as online. Although there are small segments on strategic planning elements, the greatest value lies in the questions which go directly to the heart and purpose of the organization.
Added 10/13/02 - The Manager Org --- Our link takes you to the site map for this management portal to the internet. It has an extensive directory of managerial topics, including strategic planning, and an international content and flavor in the consideration of management issues.
