Will Rogers Book Awards

Friday, August 13th, 2010

Will Rogers Mediallion AwardWe’ve just received word that my latest book, Views from the Saddle, has received the 2010 Will Rogers Medallion Award for Cowboy Poetry. It is my second such award, the first granted to my book,  Western Images, in 2008.

The award recognizes both content and production, the latter recognition going to Western Poetry Publications (an imprint of The Resource Network). Specifically, the award recognizes books which exemplify “…the combination of excellent content, high production values and honoring of the Cowboy Heritage that the award was created to acknowledge.”

The award has special meaning for me in that Will Rogers was one of my heroes in the early 1930s. His story-telling ability and his unmatched sense of humor were much appreciated during those days during the Great Depression and drought as I was growing up in the Sandhills of Nebraska.

Thank You Jane Kaczmarek

Jane, I just discovered that you recited my poem “Chopin’s Minute Waltz” at the Paderewski Music Society Program celebrating Chopin’s 200th Birthday in Los Angeles on February 27th.

I wanted to thank you directly but I was unable to find your address.

So, I thank you here publicly. I am tremendously pleased that you selected the poem to be used in opening the show that evening, especially since the book Chopin With Cherries edited by Maja Trochimczyk contained so many wonderful tributes to Chopin and his work.

Thank you again,

Clark

Chopin with Cherries

Thursday, February 4th, 2010

One of my poems, “Chopin’s Minute Waltz,” appears in a new book, Chopin with Cherries: a tribute in verse, ISBN 978-0-9819693-0-5, published by Moonrise Press and available through Lulu as well as other online and local booksellers.

Sorta unusual, but real nice for an old cowboy to be featured along with an impressive array of modern poets. But it’s understandable ’cause Chopin’s music transcends time and was much appreciated in the salons, saloons, and opera houses of the American West.

The book, an anthology of contemporary poetry edited by Maja Trochimczyk, will be officially presented during the 3rd International Chopin Congress (an event celebrating the 200th anniversary of Chopin’s birth) in Warsaw, Poland, February 24-March 1, 2010.

A second edition of the collection, planned for release next fall, will be bilingual and will include Polish translations by Polish-American poets: Leonard Kress, Maja Trochimczyk, Janusz Zalewski, and others.

In Tribute

Sunday, May 24th, 2009

This poem seems especially appropriate at this time. A friend commissioned it by asking what a cowboy might say to our military folks. The friend, Greg, died shortly after that so this sort of seems like a double tribute. It’s reprinted here from my latest book.

Our sons and daughters, gallant heroes all,
they have no voice in where they go or when,
volunteers serving at our nation’s call,
redeployed once, then again and again.

Theirs is not to question the wrong or right
that sends them from home to far away lands;
theirs is go where they are sent to fight,
to bleed, on distant shores and desert sands.

Today we honor young warriors who serve,
responding so heroically and well,
and we grant them the tribute they deserve,
for they serve despite knowing “war is hell.”

It is for these young warriors that we stand,
each a hero in service to this land.

Book Promo & Sales

Monday, April 27th, 2009

I had a recent question. A friend noticed that my books are listed with all the major booksellers while most poetry books are sold by smaller retailers or by the authors themselves.

It’s sort of a long story but the short of it is that my books are POD (print-on-demand) and the folks who handle the printing see that the book listings are made available to all major distributors and booksellers. That frees me up from marketing and promotion while enabling me to do what I like best…writing and performing western and cowboy poetry. The downside is that, in order to get a book printed, I have to do all of the layout, including cover design, but that’s a small price to pay.

Beyond that, I believe in sharing. So all of my poems are accumulated on my website. Then, when enough are there to create another book, I just pull them off the website, create the book, and start the process all over again.

Poetry Postcard Fest

Saturday, April 11th, 2009

There is an interesting postcard exchange which takes place annually. Individuals sign up and agree to mail a postcard containing an original poem each week, moving down the list of registrants.

I’ve received cards from South Africa and Japan as well as from individuals throughout the United States. Poems are, more or less, short and “spur of the moment” creations. More information is available by clicking here.
